Programs

Here is an overview of the Hungarian major, in its different forms. (For a full list of all our programs, including certain doctoral programs offered for international students in English, please click here.)

Teacher training (5 or 6 years)

  • Hungarian teacher training program

Our teacher training program in Hungarian language and literature runs as a joint program of two majors, with a significant amount of pedagogical and psychological training. The Hungarian major can be coupled with several other majors like history, languages, media, or ethics. After the first 3 years of study, students have the opportunity to decide whether they would like to work toward a diploma required for an elementary school  teaching position or one required for high-schools. Accordingly, they complete an additional 1 or 2 years of study, after which another year is devoted to practical training. With the inclusion of this teaching practice, the program takes 5 or 6 years altogether.

  • Why have a teacher’s diploma in Hungarian language and literature?

On the one hand, because as a teacher of two subjects (Hungarian and some other), you will of course be entitled to occupy a teaching position in a school of your own choice. Graduates are furnished with apt theoretical and historical knowledge as well as useful practical experience, as they begin their teaching career. On the other hand, a teacher’s diploma may grant access to many other forms of work, along the various competences related to the two major fields of study. A teacher’s diploma in Hungarian language and literature may open the way for a number of jobs besides teaching, where good communication skills and an excellence in interpreting and formulating texts is of high importance.

Hungarian BA and MA programs (3 plus 2 years)

We run the Hungarian major as a humanities program on both BA and MA levels. Since these programs do not include another major, nor a pedagogical and psychological module, students are able to study the diverse subjects of Hungarian language and literature more broadly and in more detail, as compared to the teacher training program. Students also have the opportunity, on both levels, to select a specialization (or a minor) which best fits their personal interest. They can even spend a semester studying abroad in the framework of the European mobility scheme (Erasmus+).

    • Hungarian Language and Literature BA program

The Hungarian Language and Literature BA program is a 3-year program during which students take basic courses in linguistics and literature, learn the fundamental techniques of research and analysis, but also specialize in a field of their own choice. With a BA diploma in hand, they can either enter the job market, going for jobs that require a basic university degree, or they may decide to continue their studies in a masters program.

This BA program is also available as a minor, offering Hungarian linguistic and literary studies as an additional field of focus for non-Hungarian majors, in a condensed form.

    • Hungarian Language and Literature MA program

The Hungarian Language and Literature MA program takes 2 years. It aims at deepening and supplementing the subjects and skills covered by the BA program, while offering further possibilities for specialization. Unlike the BA program, it is more theoretical in character, and marks an important step toward jobs with higher qualification requirements, or toward doctoral programs with academic perspectives.

Why study Hungarian BA or MA?

Hungarian language and literature is one of the most traditional majors in the humanities. A Hungarian major diploma will grant its holder advantage in the job market primarily in fields related to literature, language, and culture. But since the program facilitates the professional improvement of basic competences, a diploma in Hungarian is nicely convertible, and, with certain additions, can efficiently be utilized in areas far off from literary studies or linguistics. Analytical and compositional skills, or an ability to behold interconnections between seemingly distant cultural phenomena, allow our students to succeed in positions, where a good sense of style, an eye for historical and cultural perspectives, or an individual and creative mode of thought are of prime significance.

    Ideal environment

Szeged is a city of festivals, theatres, cinemas, clubs, exhibits and concerts, but it is still a city of a moderate size where things are within walking distance. It is also a city of a many bikers, and a rich aqua culture both on the river Tisza and in the baths and swimming pools around town. Szeged offers a wide range of cultural, sports and entertainment facilities, with reasonable living costs and rental rates, an outstanding local transportation system, and easy national or international accessibility.

With its 12 different faculties and the diversity of its students, the University of Szeged is holding a prestigious position in international rakings. And the same goes for the Faculty of Arts as well. The Institute of Hungarian Language and Literature is a community of acknowledged experts, friendly and helpful professors and staff. Programs in Hungarian language and literature are run jointly by the departments of the Institute, and are based on an adequate technical infrastructure. The József Attila Study and Information Center is located right next to the Faculty of Arts, and is surrounded by a bunch of cafés, restaurants, copy shops, and other services. Its main facility, the Klebelsberg Library, which is one of the 50 most amazing university libraries in the world, provides a modern working environment both for individual study or online research, and for cooperative teamwork, while also being a favored place for socializing.

    Talent nurture

Continual development is enhanced by our nationally acknowledged “student circles”, our research workshops, an ideal proportion between students and professors, a tone of friendliness, several mentors, as well as many small-group seminars. More…

Beside open days, other special events provide opportunities for high-school students both to deepen their knowledge and to contact us.

Interested high-school students and their parents are cordially invited to attend any of the lectures and workshops we offer in the framework of the Researchers’ Night every September.

We also welcome all those interested to attend any of our events at the Autumnal Cultural Festival and the University Spring of the University of Szeged.
