About us

Mission

Focus and diversity. These two terms might well capture the core features of our Institute. Our prime focus is the Hungarian major with all its different subjects in linguistics and literary studies, as well as its different versions as far as teacher training and humanities are concerned, but a number of smaller or less frequent research or study areas are also present in our spectrum.

The Hungarian Institute is home to a large variety of subjects outside Hungarian studies: from ancient Greek and Latin, through Finnish or Estonian, to Turkish language and culture, from the theoretical and historical dimension of literary and linguistic studies to the realms of applied research, from theatre and film studies, through the broader issues of visual culture, to the varied interdisciplinary questions of cultural studies. All these add up to a uniquely colorful and innovative selection of programs, whether one thinks of BA or MA studies, doctoral studies, or supplementary teacher training opportunities.

Our potentials are also our obligations. They compel us to do our best in equipping students with all the knowledge and skills they might need later on. We get assistance from our lively contacts with local institutions of educations (elementary schools and high schools), traditional and progressive artistic organizations, or the research communities of all the other faculties of the University of Szeged. We can also depend on rich national and global connections, with a growing number of international students and visiting professors. We are glad to see our own students go abroad to pursue studies in foreign institutions for several months on Erasmus scholarships, or to witness their successes in academic student contests as well as in the labor market (state or private). A friendly style of communication, an ideal proportion between students and faculty, a wide selection of small group courses and a keen attentiveness to individual needs are the clue to such results.

Good luck to all our students and academic partners in their studies and research!
